The name “Zellig” is inspired by the Dutch word “Gezellig”—”a concept often considered untranslatable, yet deeply associated with coziness, comfort, and a warm social atmosphere.” ZDCO strives to materialize these ideas by drawing inspiration from art history, contemporary design, cultural influences and the natural world. ZDCO believes that a personalized and desirable space to live in is fundamental to happiness and can be easily achieved through thoughtful design and intention.

Zellig Design Co was founded in 2025 by John Quigley, tradesman and academically trained painter. The mission of Zellig Design Co (ZDCO) is to provide high-quality, yet affordable design solutions to homeowners throughout New England.

Studying in Lowell, Massachusetts while apprenticing under one of New England’s top restaurant upholsterers, John received his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art. He gained experience working at some of Lowell’s most historical art galleries before relocating to Portland, Maine in 2016. While pursuing his Master’s Degree in Studio Art from the Maine College of Art & Design in 2020, he concurrently honed his home renovation skills while working with New England Residential Contracting and Maine Home Ownership. As an accomplished artist, John has exhibited internationally and maintains an active private painting practice.
